Defense, Public Order, and Safety

Sector Coverage

This is a combination of two functional sectors: Defense and Public Order and Safety (DPOS). Defense (D; Military and civil defense) concerns providing overarching security mainly externally. Public Order and Safety (POS) entails domestic provision of: Police services; Fire protection services; Operation of law courts (civil and criminal); and Prison and jail systems (including services to prepare prisoners’ return to society). In combination, DPOS, when supplied effectively in the context of this LTSPFBA, will ensure that Black Americans remain safe and secure.

Dr. Brooks Robinson provides oversight for this sector.

Latest Developments

The LTSP Panel is engaged in efforts to motivate the development/production of a 60-, 90-, or 120-second video montage that would serve as a chilling quilt of video images that reflect the pain, suffering, and murder that Black Americans have experienced historically at the hands of America’s militarized police forces. We propose that this video be broadcasts in numerous venues–possibly none more important than during televised sporting events where our youth exhibit such joy chasing balls around courts and fields. Please contact us if you have an interest in helping develop this video montage.

Important Information

During the week beginning Sunday, June 17, 2024, there was a hullabaloo concerning fake news about the US Congress mandating automatic military registration for 18-25 year olds. But, as noted, it was “fake news.” Nevertheless, with the Russian-Ukraine War, the Israeli-Hamas War, and skirmishes elsewhere (including in Dafur, South Sudan), Black and all remaining Americans should be cognizant of prospects for more widespread wars. The following is offered as just one perspective on how Black Americans might view wars: “Dark Clouds or Sunshine? The Black Economics of War”.

Assistance Required

Did you know that in 2020, Federal and state imprisonment was at the rate of 358 incarcerees per 100,000. However, 938 Black Americans were incarcerated for each 100,000 Black Americans. This outcome, while improving recently, remains unacceptable. Do you have ideas concerning how Black Americans can reduce our rate of incarceration? Have you reviewed the LTSPFBA’s recommendations for reducing it? The LTSP Panel would like to hear from you. Consult the “Contact” page and join the discussion and action to reduce Black American imprisonment.
